Some talked, many listened.  Did we hear each other right?

Our values need to be firmly grounded in Scripture. The Holy Spirit's work needs to be included.  And so much more.

Let's restate the concepts so that they inspire us to action.

A Review

Who was talking?

We were encouraged that over 400 people listened intently and visited the web site almost daily during the 3-plus months from October 2009 to present. However, we were disappointed that only a small number actually got involved with the online conversation.  Nevertheless, dialogue in the regions and at the Pastors/General Council Retreat in February helped many others get involved.

What we heard

  • We like...
    • the emphasis on being more intentional about discipleship. We desire to recapture the call to follow Jesus in all areas of our life.
    • We affirm that the gospel is good news when it is preached and lived.
  • We would like to see...
    • The Holy Spirit mentioned in our core values.  Without reference to God's empowering presence we slip into human effort or legalism.
    • We value the Bible and our Confession of Faith.  We would like to see a closer connection.
    • We are crazy about missions. This is our strength and our common bond.
  • We need clarification...
    • Some do not understand the value of this effort and the real difference it will make.
    • Many are not sure about the actual value of being part of the "conference".  In other words, we are not sure who we are as an EMMC and why we matter.  What is unique about us and what particular role do we play in the Kingdom?  How are we different from other similar denominations?
    • We need help in understanding what it would look like to embrace and live out these values.

 Where to now?

In the coming weeks we will use this space to answer some of those questions and to explore fresh ways of stating our "core values" so that they reflect what we have heard.  We need your help in tweaking the statements and finding the right words.  We need your help in praying that we hear God and each other well.

Stuart Murray has written a new book entitled - "The Naked Anabaptist".  His objective for the book is to get to the essentials of the Anabaptist faith.  He believes cultural baggage has limited the movement from taking root in a broader context.  Below is a summary of what he believes are the distinctives of the tradtion.  Is he right?  How do these line up with your understanding?

Draft Three - how does this sound?

Discispleship - We are obedient to Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Community - We care for and about each other.

Reconciliation - We invite people to be reconciled to God and each other.

How do we say these core values so that the person in the pew or on the street knows what we are talking about?

Community, Fellowship, Gemeindshaft, Koinonia?

There was some confusion about what was intented with the word "community".   In Belize this word has a different tone than it does here in Canada.   What word best describes this Biblical concept of the Body of Christ loving, growing and serving together? Is it possible for us to understand the concept and allow for regions or churches to choose what works best in their setting?
